Mom's spiced apple punch

Ingredients

2teaspoonsGround cinnamon
1teaspoonDried grated lemon peel
¼teaspoonGround cloves
¼teaspoonGround allspice
¼teaspoonGround nutmeg
1gramApple cider
1quartGinger ale; chilled
2Red Delicious apples; cut
. crosswise into 1/4 inch
. thick slices, and
. cinnamon sticks to
. garnish

Directions

Place spices in a 6-inch square of cheesecloth or a coffee filter and tie with string. Pour the cider into a stockpot. Add the bundle of spices. Stirring occasionally, cook over medium-low heat 1½ hours.

Remove from the heat; cool to room temperature. Remove the spice bundle and discard. Place the punch in a covered container and freeze.

Remove the punch from the freezer 4 hours before serving to partially thaw. To serve, break into chunks. Add the ginger ale and stir until slushy. Ladle into glasses and garnish with apple slices and cinnamon sticks.

Makes about twenty-two 6oz servings.
