Ingredients

2 | cups | Milk, scalded |
1 | Yeast cake | |
2 | Egg yolks, beaten | |
1 | teaspoon | Salt |
½ | cup | Sugar |
pinch | Cardamom | |
5 | cups | To 6 flour |
½ | cup | Butter |
Directions
Cool milk to lukewarm. Add yeast and 1 teaspoon of the sugar; let stand 10 minutes. Add egg yolks, salt, sugar and cardamom; mix well.
Stir in flour to make a soft dough. Let raise about an hour. Roll out dough quite thin adding more flour if necessary. Spread dough with butter; cut into three strips; fold each strip so that the butter is on the inside; braid the strips. Cut into loaves or make a wreath.
Let raise again about an hour; brush top with egg whites and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes.
