Chocolate date squares

Ingredients

| 1 | cup | Hot water |
| 1 | cup | Sugar |
| ⅔ | cup | Shortening |
| 1 | cup | Semisweet chocolate chips -- |

| 1½ | cup | All-purpose flour |
| 1 | teaspoon | Baking soda |
| ½ | teaspoon | Salt |
| ½ | cup | Packed brown sugar |
| ½ | cup | Chopped nuts |
Directions
TOPPING
In a bowl, combine dates and water; set aside to cool (do not drain).
In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, flour, baking soda and salt; mix well. Add dates. Pour into a greased and floured 13x9x2 inch. baking pan. Combine the topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter. bake at 350 deg. for 40 min. or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Yield: 24 servings.
