Doughnut puffs

2 | tablespoons | Butter or margarine |
½ | cup | Sugar |
2 | Eggs | |
2 | cups | Sifted flour |
2 | teaspoons | Baking powder |
½ | teaspoon | Salt |
¼ | teaspoon | Nutmeg |
½ | teaspoon | Mace |
½ | cup | Milk |
Sugar for rolling |
Cream butter and sugar together in large mixing bowl. Add eggs and beat well. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and mace. Mix at low speed with mixer while adding flour mixture alternately with milk. Mix to make a smooth, soft dough. Chill dough thoroughly- 2 to 3 hours. Drop dough by rounded spoonfuls into hot oil ( 400 degrees) dipping spoon into hot fat each time before putting into batter. Fry evenly, about 3 minutes. Drain.
Roll in sugar before serving.
Makes 2 dozen.
