Quantity | Ingredient | |
---|---|---|
1 | 750-ml bottle dry red wine | |
½ | cup | Sugar |
½ | teaspoon | Whole cloves, crushed |
6 | Ripe Bartlett pears with stems | |
½ | cup | Mascarpone cheese (see Note) |
1 | tablespoon | Orange-flavored liqueur |
Directions
1. In 3-quart saucepan, heat wine, sugar, and cloves to boiling, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, core and seed pears from bottom end. Peel, leaving pears whole with stems intact.
2. Heat oven to 400'F. Place pears upright in 13 by 9-inch baking dish. Pour wine mixture over pears and bake 1 hour or until tender, basting pears with wine mixture about every 10 minutes.
3. With slotted spoon, transfer pears to 6 rimmed dessert plates.
Strain syrup into glass measuring cup. If necessary, add water or return to saucepan and boil rapidly until syrup measures ½ cup.
4. Spoon syrup over pears. If desired, stir liqueur into mascarpone.
Divide mascarpone among dessert plates and serve pears warm.
Note: If mascarpone is unavailable in your supermarket, fold ¼ C plain yogurt into one 3-oz package cream cheese, softened.
