Savory pole beans (moravian)

2 | pounds | Fresh pole beans |
1 | small | Clove garlic |
¼ | cup | Cooking oil |
1 | cup | Chopped green pepper |
6 | slices | Onion |
2 | teaspoons | Salt |
1 | teaspoon | To 1-1/2 ts dried whole basil |
1 | teaspoon | Sugar |
½ | cup | Boiling water |
¼ | cup | Parmesan cheese; grated |
Remove strings from beans; cut beans into 1-inch pieces, and wash.
Saute garlic in hot oil until tender; remove and discard. Add green pepper and onion to hot oil, and saute about 3 minutes over low heat or until tender. Add salt, basil, sugar, and water. Cover, and cook over low heat for 15 minutes or until beans are tender. Sprinkle with cheese.
