Party bake apples

Ingredients

| ½ | cup | Dark corn syrup |
| ½ | cup | Water |
| ¼ | teaspoon | Cinnamon |
| 1 | teaspoon | Grated lemon rind |
| 1 | tablespoon | Butter |
| 2 | tablespoons | Sugar |
| 4 | Baking apples | |
| 1 | Egg white | |
| 2 | tablespoons | Sugar |
| 14 | Blanched almonds, shredded | |
| 4 | Maraschino cherries, chopped | |
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine first 6 ingredients. Bring to boil. Remove from heat. Core apples; pare upper halves. Place in shallow baking pan. Pour syrup mixture over apples. Bake for about 1 hour, or until tender, basting frequently. Remove from oven.
Beat egg white until foamy; gradually beat in 2 tblsp. sugar. Top apples with meringue; insert almonds and cherries. Return to oven; bake 15 minutes, or until delicately browned. Serves 4.
