Hudson valley apple brown betty

Ingredients

5 | cups | Tart cooking apples; peeled and chopped |
3 | cups | Bread crumbs; coarse, fresh white |
5 | tablespoons | Melted butter |
1 | cup | Brown sugar |
1 | pinch | Ground cinnamon |
1 | pinch | Ground allspice |
1 | pinch | Ground nutmeg |
1 | tablespoon | Grated orange peel |
Directions
Tart apples such as Spys, Baldwins, Winesaps or Granny Smith.
Toss apples with spices. Drizzle melted butter over bread cubes and toss until butter is absorbed evenly. Spread bread in bottom of ½ qt. souffle' dish, cover with apples. Sprinkle with orange peel and brown sugar.
Repeat layers until dish is full. Finish with a layer of bread, dot with butter pieces and sprinkle with sugar. Bake in preheated 375 oven for 30-40 minutes until golden.
