Yield: 8 Servings
Measure | Ingredient |
---|---|
2 cups | Flour |
1 teaspoon | Salt |
½ cup | Shortening |
5 tablespoons | Water |
½ | Stick butter |
½ cup | Sugar |
½ teaspoon | Nutmeg |
1 cup | Sugar |
2 cups | Milk |
1 teaspoon | Vanilla |
Mix flour, salt and shortening. Add water. Make a smooth ball. Divide this into 4 balls. Roll each out on a floured board to thickness of pie crust.
Sprinkle with pieces of the butter--Grandma used fresh cow butter--and the sugar and nutmeg mix together. Roll up and seal ends. Make 4 rolls like this and place in an iron skillet.
Pierce through each roll with fork in 3 or 4 places. Bake at 400 degrees until brown and crisp.
Meanwhile, mix 1 cup sugar, milk and vanilla. Pour this over browned rolls and return to the oven for 5 minutes.
