Vanilla sauce

¾ | cup | Sugar |
2½ | tablespoon | Cornstarch |
¼ | teaspoon | Each freshly grated nutmeg |
And salt | ||
2 | cups | Warm water |
2 | tablespoons | Unsalted butter |
1½ | teaspoon | Vanilla |
½ | teaspoon | Finely grated lemon zest |
Directions
In a small saucepan combine sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg and salt. Add water in a stream whisking constantly and then simmer sauce over low heat until thickened (about 3 minutes). Off heat, whisk in butter, vanilla and zest. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve with warm steamed pudding.
