|3 cups||Sifted flour|
|4 teaspoons||Baking powder|
|1 \N||Lightly beaten egg|
|¼ cup||Melted shortening|
|1½ cup||Coarsely chopped walnuts|
Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Combine egg, shortening, milk and vanilla and add to dry mixture. Stir just until all flour is moistened. Stir in nuts. Turn into greased loaf pan or divide between 2 greased 2½ lb cans. Bake in 350 oven for 80 minutes or 70 minutes for cans. Var: 1) Blend ⅓ cup brown sugar, 1 ½ Tbls. flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon and 2 Tbls. butter together. Prepare batter as directed. Pour half into loaf pan. Sprinkle strusel mixture over batter. Top with remaining batter. Bake according to instructions.
2) Add 2 tsp. grated orange peel to egg and milk mixture. Add ¾ cup chopped candied fruit with the nuts.
