Measure | Ingredient |

2 cups | Dried Pinto Beans |
5 cups | Water |
½ teaspoon | Garlic Powder |
\N \N | Salt; To Taste |
1 small | Onion |
1 teaspoon | Brown Sugar |
½ cup | Salt Pork; Or, 6 Slices Of Bacon, Cut Up |
½ teaspoon | Cumin |
½ teaspoon | Oregano |
Wash beans and soak them in water at least 4 hours or as long as overnight.
Drain water from beans.
Place beans in large pot with remaining ingredients except salt and bring to a boil. Immediately reduce heat and cook over low heat until beans are tender, adding salt only during last 15 minutes of cooking.
If you use a pressure cooker, remove the top at the end of the cooking period and boil rapidly at least 15 minutes.
