Pickling liquid

3 | cups | Distilled white vinegar |
1 | cup | Water |
2½ | cup | Sugar |
¼ | cup | Salt |
1½ | teaspoon | Whole allspice |
1 | (3-inch) cinnamon stick | |
1½ | teaspoon | Celery seeds |
1½ | teaspoon | Mustard seeds |
1½ | teaspoon | Whole black pepper corns |
Place all of the ingredients in a nonreactive saucepan, over high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat to medium and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool completely.
