From: "Mary f (Pud)" <frye@...> Date: 19 Dec 1995 18:22:13 -0700 My Aunt made these and they are one of my favorite Christmas cookies. They are delicate in flavor and usually a real winner.
Preheat oven to 375F. Mix first 5 ingredients together. Sift flour and salt together. Stir ½ of flour mixture into shortening mixture. Work remaining flour into mixture with hands until the dough holds together.
Divide dough in half. Mix ½ of dough with red food coloring. Pinch off a bit of white dough and roll into a long cigarette, pinch off a bit of red dough and roll into a long cigarette. Twist white and red dough together, place on cookie sheet and bend into a candy cane shape. Bake 9 minutes.
Remove from oven and dust with granulated sugar. The first time you make them watch the time as your cookies might be larger or smaller than mine :-).
