Schnitz un knepp (apples and buttons)

Yield: 1 Servings

Measure Ingredient
1 quart Dried apples
3 pounds Smoked ham
2 tablespoons Brown sugar
2 cups Flour
4 teaspoons Baking powder
1 teaspoon Salt
¼ teaspoon Pepper
1 \N Egg; well beaten
3 tablespoons Melted butter
½ cup Milk

Cover the dried apples with water; soak overnight. In the morning, cover ham with water and simmer for 2 hrs. Add the apples & water in which they have been soaked & continue to simmer about 1 hr. Add the brown sugar.

Dumplings: Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, & pepper. Quickly stir in all at one time just until blended a mixture of the beaten egg, butter, & milk. Drop by tablespoons onto simmering ham & apples. Tightly cover the kettle & cook
