Canada war cake

Ingredients

2cupsBrown or white sugar
2cupsWater
cupLard or shortening
1cupRaisins
¼teaspoonSalt
½teaspoonNutmeg
2teaspoonsCinnamon
1teaspoonGround cloves
2teaspoonsBaking soda; mixed with
cupCold coffee or water
4cupsAll-purpose flour; sifted with
1teaspoonBaking powder
1cupChopped nuts
Whole or half nuts; optional

Directions

Boil sugar, water, lard, raisins, salt and spices 5 minutes. Let cool, then add baking soda and flour mixtures. Mix thoroughly (batter should be quite stiff). Add chopped nuts. Pour into greased and floured rectangular or square pans and decorate with nuts. Bake in preheated 350°F oven 30 to 35 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean.

I usually omit the half or whole nuts and just lightly dust the top with powdered sugar.
