Bread-and-butter plckles

| 16 | cups | Cucumber -- sliced abt 4 lbs |
| 6 | cups | Onions -- thinly sliced |
| ½ | cup | Salt |
| Ice cubes | ||
| 5 | cups | Sugar |
| 5 | cups | Cider vinegar |
| 1½ | teaspoon | Turmeric |
| 1½ | teaspoon | Celery seed |
| 1½ | teaspoon | Mustard seed |
Directions
Combine cucumber and onion slices in a large bowl. Layer with salt; cover with ice cubes. Let stand 1-½ hours. Drain and rinse. Place remaining ingredients in a kettle and bring to a boil. Add cucumbers and onions. Return to a boil. Pack hot into hot jars to within ¼ in. of top. Remove any air bubbles. Adjust caps. Process 15 minutes in boiling-water bath. Yield: about 6 pints.
