Treats: applesauce date bars

Ingredients

¼cupUnsalted butter, softened
½cupPacked brown sugar
1Egg
1teaspoonVanilla
cupAll-purpose flour
1teaspoonCinnamon
1teaspoonUnsweetened cocoa powder
½teaspoonBaking powder
½teaspoonBaking soda
¼teaspoonGround nutmeg
pinchGround cloves
pinchSalt
¾cupDates, chopped
1cupApplesauce
½cupIcing sugar
2teaspoonsOrange juice

Directions

TOPPING

In bowl, beat butter with sugar; beat in egg and vanilla. In separate bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, cloves and salt; stir in dates. Fold flour mixture into butter mixture alternately with applesauce [use unsweetened applesauce for best flavour.], making 3 additions of dry and 2 of applesauce.

Spread in greased 8-inch square cake pan; Bake in 350F 180C oven for 30 minutes or until tester inserted into centre comes out clean. Let cool completely on rack.

Topping: In small bowl, whisk together icing sugar and orange juice; drizzle over cake. Cut into bars.
