Great-grandma's ginger cake

| 1 | teaspoon | Baking soda |
| 1 | teaspoon | Ground ginger |
| 1 | teaspoon | Ground cinnamon |
| 2 | teaspoons | Salt |
| dash | Ground cloves | |
| ½ | cup | Sugar |
| ½ | cup | Shortening |
| ⅔ | cup | Molasses |
| 1 | each | Egg, beaten |
| ¾ | cup | Boiling water |

Directions
Combine the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, salt, and cloves; set aside. In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add molasses and egg; mix well. Stir in the dry ingredients alternately with water. Pour into a greased 9" square baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Cool completely. Cut into squares; top with a dollop of whipped topping. Leftovers will keep several days in an airtight container. Serves: 9 From: "Taste of Home" Magazine, April/May 1995
