Gertie carlson's bread and butter pickles

Ingredients

| 6 | quarts | Sliced medium cucumbers |
| 6 | mediums | Onions; sliced |
| 1 | cup | Pickling salt |
| 1½ | quart | Vinegar |
| ½ | cup | Mustard seed |
| 6 | cups | Sugar |
| 1 | tablespoon | Celery seed |
| ¼ | Cayenne pepper; up to 1/3, up to | |
Directions
Combine cucumbers, onions, & salt, and let stand for three hours. Drain.
Combine seasonings and vinegar, and bring to a boil. Add cucumbers & onions. Heat to simmering and pack hot. Be careful to avoid boiling, as that makes the pickles soft. Pack hot into clean Ball jars and seal immediately.
Notes - I'm not sure if these need to be processed in a water bath or not.
