|2 cups||Firmly packed brown sugar|
|1 cup||Granulated sugar|
|1||Vanilla bean; split lengthwise or 1/4 cup REAL vanilla extract|
|1 quart||Light rum|
In a saucepan, combine water and the sugars and vanilla bean. Bring to a boil. Boil 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool.
Add rum I vanilla extract (if used). Pour into 2 quart bottles with tight fitting covers. Let stand 2 weeks, shaking occasionally. Remove vanilla bean, if used before serving.
Makes 7 cups liquid.
