½ cup | Shortening (vegetable oil) |
½ teaspoon | Salt |
½ teaspoon | Lemon juice |
½ teaspoon | Nutmeg |
1 cup | Sugar |
2 \N | Eggs; well beaten |
2 tablespoons | Milk |
2 cups | Flour; sifted |
1 teaspoon | Baking powder |
½ teaspoon | Baking soda |
\N \N | Decorator icing; various colors |
Mix vegetable oil, salt, lemon juice, nutmeg and sugar. Add eggs, milk and flour sifted with baking powder and soda. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Gently press each cookie flat with the bottom of a glass that has been moistened and dipped in sugar. Bake in 375-degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until golden brown around edges. Do not overbake.
When cool, use decorator icing to write "100" on each cookie, in honor of the Century Celebration.
