Date: Wed, 26 Jan 1994 14:08:26 MDT These were my grandmother's specialty. Keep them stored in an airtight container as they tend to dry out quickly. They're especially good for dunking in coffee!
Preheat oven to 350. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs amd beat thoroughly. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and soda together. Add alternately with milk to creamed mixture. Fold in dates and nuts. Pour into greased, shallow pans. Bake in 350 oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Cut into bars when still warm and sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
